🕊️ Honoring Juneteenth

A Day of Freedom, Reflection, and Bulldog Pride

Juneteenth is more than a date on the calendar. It is a powerful reminder of freedom, resilience, history, and the long journey toward justice for African Americans in this country.

On June 19, we pause to recognize the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. That moment became known as Juneteenth, a day that reminds us that freedom delayed was still freedom worth celebrating, protecting, and remembering.

Knicks in 5! — A Week of Inspiration

City Ced in the crowd at the Knicks championship celebration in New York City

This week, like most others, started slow — then BAM, things hit fast. The Bulldog Wire was inspired by athletes, for athletes, to engage and stay engaged. All of the conversations I have been having have given tremendous fuel to provide a vehicle that does just that.

Quick note — I’ve gotten a few requests to interview non-athletes, which has inspired the newest addition to the Wire: Bulldog Wire Alumni Edition. Stay tuned for the first vodcast (newsletter to follow)!

This is a segue into more inspiration. If you haven’t watched TV or been on social media in the past week, you may not have known that after 53 years, the New York Knicks have won the NBA championship. And oh boy, what a feeling.

I grew up a Knicks fan. I used to drive for the Knicks team — I would drive Charles Oakley, Herb Williams, Derrick Harper, and Doc Rivers’ parents to doctor appointments and other activities around the city. I helped members of my family do the same. I was very involved during the last run in ’99 and was beyond devastated when we didn’t win it.

Over the years, because of moves made by ownership, I wasn’t so much into them — but last year I came around again, and this season was magical. I decided I was going to NY to experience the atmosphere. It’s too long of a story to tell all, but I had a standby ticket and got down to the last seat, was about to board the plane, and a lady from another flight had done a good deed so they gave it to her.

🏆 Bulldog Legacy

Congratulations to John L. Courtney!

John L. Courtney — SC State Hall of Fame Class of 2026

The Bulldog family is proud to celebrate one of our own — Bulldog legend John L. Courtney — as he is welcomed into the South Carolina State University Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

For those who know SC State football history, John L. Courtney’s name carries weight. As a dominant defensive lineman from 1978 to 1982, he brought power, discipline, and leadership to the field, earning his place among the greats in HBCU football history.

Wearing that proud #90, Courtney became known as one of the most feared defenders of his era.

What an exciting and historic moment for South Carolina State University! The SCSU Concert Choir made its Carnegie Hall debut last Sunday, June 14, at 1:00 p.m., marking a truly unforgettable milestone for the university, the choir, and the Bulldog family.

Under the leadership of Dr. Johnnie Felder, the choir was sent off in true Bulldog spirit. 🎙️ Life After SCSU — Featured Interview

Roberta Williams

Roberta Williams in action on the court for SC State

The all-time leading scorer in SC State University women’s basketball history, Roberta Williams, Class of ’80, was the first to play in the WBL.

She is also the first female athlete from SC State to be inducted into the SC Athletic Hall of Fame — a true trailblazer for the Bulldog family.

During the live interview I forgot to ask Roberta what dorm she stayed in, so I texted her and here is the answer: Freshman — Manning Hall, Sophomore — Truth Hall (High Rise), Junior — Truth Hall, Senior — Williams Hall.
